September Cupcake Decorating Class

Hi everyone,

We have been very quiet on the blog front recently as Sophie has gone travelling round the world and I haven’t had internet at home since I moved in June which has been very annoying! But hopefully it will all be sorted next week and Makery Mill will be back in action!

Cupcake decorating workshop

We have a few places left for our cupcake decorating class on 21st September in Leamington Spa so get booked in if you fancy treating yourself to a relaxing, fun afternoon of cake activity. We’ve had quite a few bookings recently that have been presents for people which is a really lovely idea and perfect for those ‘hard to buy for’ people! The class is £35 for a two hour class in which you will learn how to perfect several piping techniques, make sugar decorations and gain tips on fondant iced cakes. You will have six cakes each to decorate and take home to enjoy with your friends and family, or you can just scoff them all yourself! You can find more details here on the upcoming class. We hope to see some of you there :)

WI Mad Hatter’s Tea Party and Auction in Leamington – we’ll be there!

We’ve been a bit quiet lately but will be well and truly back in action this Saturday with a stall at the Leamington WI Lite’s Mad Hatter’s Tea Party and Auction! It should be a great, fun event with lots for kids and adults alike with a treasure hunt, craft stalls, an auction and homemade cakes (always good!) We will be selling lots of sewing and handmade crafty bits with a few cake pops thrown in; look out for bunting kits, button pictures, beach bags, phone cases, aprons and more. We’ll be joined by Two Sisters Sew who will be selling all their lovely handcrafted bits so come and have a look at our unique gift ideas and gorgeous items for you and your home.

The event runs 12pm-5pm at Victoria House, 59 Willes Road, Leamington and all proceeds go to brilliant local charity, Molly Olly’s Wishes. The auction starts at 2pm so make sure you get along for that as the WI ladies have managed to get some amazing donations including champagne afternoon tea at Mallory Court, a photoshoot with Liz Drake Photography and organic skincare products from Neal’s Yard Remedies. Hope to meet some of you there!

Our top craft Father’s Day picks

Everyone knows that the best gift to their parents is something thoughtful and hand-made, and with Father’s Day coming up this Sunday, now’s the time to get creative and make Dad something special!

We have created a board with our top Pinterest picks for Father’s Day craft and baking ideas. We especially love the DAD specs, and the special jars filled with home-made treats. Have a look at our finds here: Father’s Day Pinboard

Paper craft and button picture workshop

This weekend we hosted our first Makery Mill paper craft and button picture class. Our craft workshop attendees learnt the techniques for making intricate paper pinwheels, card ruffle flowers and tissue paper flowers. There was then an opportunity to create either a piece of artwork to frame, or a gift card and box set to take home.

We were glad that learning these new craft skills helped to inspire new making ideas among the class (such as napkin holders, party decorations and christmas tree hangings), and we are very proud of the beautiful results they had on their first attempt with this multi-media style of artwork. It is surprising how many people reckon they’re “not creative”, then put together fantastic colours and have a great eye for detail! Check out some of the students’ work below. We loved the colours used in the bird button picture, and the use of a real twig to bring it to life. The letter button pictures had a great application of colour to reflect the personality of the person who it represented. And the flowers picture was great because it showcased all the techniques our student had learnt during the lesson – integrating flowers made from tissue paper, softened card and even a card and button pinwheel. All in a range of fresh spring colours!

We have more craft workshops like this coming up. As always, we also have our cupcake decorating classes where you can also take your creations home, but have the added pleasure of eating them too! See our workshops page for more details of upcoming dates and the different Makery Mill classes on offer.
